In addition to the schemes described, the fostering service is also looking for supported lodging carers. The expectation of these carers is different from foster carers as they care for young people aged 18 and over.

What does supported lodging include?

The young person should have a room of their own and live as part of the household with access to all communal areas including kitchen, bathroom and laundry facilities. They may be given a front door key. The room should have a bed and wardrobe or storage space for clothes.

The practical details of each placement will vary according to the young person’s needs. These details will be set out in an individual agreement before the start of the placement. They include the roles and responsibilities of carer and young person with regard to meals, laundry and the use of other facilities in the home.

What does a supported lodgings carer do?

A supported lodgings carer may give help with some of the following:

  • managing budgets

  • cooking and meal preparation

  • job or college applications

  • moral support and encouragement

Reference checks will be made as standard for a supported lodgings carer and training is available for this type of care.

What will you receive in return?

Supported lodgings carers will receive a guaranteed payment of £140 per week. This will differ for each young person and may include housing benefit, wages and a variable amount from social services to meet the guaranteed sum. The goal is for young people in supported lodgings placements to manage their own finances and so receive their own personal allowance from the local authority.
