Proposed cycle schemes and routes

Developing new cycle routes

Warwickshire County Council’s Cycling Strategy within the Local Transport Plan 2011-26 focuses on developing cycle networks in the five main towns in the county – Leamington Spa, Warwick, Rugby, Nuneaton and Stratford-upon-Avon – and working with Sustrans to complete the National Cycle Network within Warwickshire.

Proposed cycle schemes 2013/14

North West Warwick Cycle Route

Warwickshire County Council officers are working towards delivering the North West Warwick Cycle Scheme, which focuses on the development of a new shared pedestrian and cycle link between Ansell Way and the Woodloes residential area in Warwick. The scheme will connect to the existing cycle route to Aylesford School which currently starts at Vittle Drive. The scheme comprises the following three phases aimed at encouraging and supporting walking and cycling for local journeys:-

Phase 3 – Lock Lane Canal Bridge to Greenway, off Woodloes Avenue South

The existing canal bridge at the end of Lock Lane will be removed and replaced with a new 3.5 metre wide deck canal bridge, suitable for shared use by pedestrians and cyclists. The bridge accesses will be improved and sections of the existing paths will be widened either side of the bridge in order to accommodate shared use by cyclists and pedestrians.

Construction works will commence on Monday 2 December 2013 and the works are expected to be completed in April 2014.

The canal bridge has now been replaced and is fully open to both pedestrians and cyclists, along with the improved access and paths accessing the structure. All major construction works are now complete, there is only minor works to be carried out in installing signs and line painting to mark the new cycle route.

Planning Application

In addition, a planning application has been submitted in respect of the construction of a new 3 metre wide path across Woodloes open space on the northern side of the canal, which will extend the proposed cycle track to Greenway, off Woodloes Avenue South. A decision on planning consent will be made in December 2013, and if granted, the works will be integrated into this phase of the works.

It is proposed that an on-road advisory route for cyclists will be signed between Greenway and Primrose Hill to connect with the existing A429 Coventry Road cycle route, as part of the National Cycle Network in Warwick.

The Other Phases of the Overall Scheme

Phase 1 – St Michael’s Land (located across the field on Saltisford Common)

Planning consent has been obtained in relation to the construction of a new 3 metre wide path across Saltisford Common, broadly along the line of the existing well-worn informal path. The new path will have a tarmac surface, lighting and be designated as shared use for pedestrians and cyclists. Construction work is expected to commence in February 2014 and be completed in April 2014.

All works are now complete on this phase of the scheme and fully open to the public both pedestrians and cyclists.

Phase 2 – St Michael’s Road to Lower Cape which includes a Toucan Crossing

On Cape Road, it is proposed that a new toucan crossing be located between Millers Road and Hanworth Road. In addition, sections of footway will be converted to shared use between pedestrians and cyclists, in order to provide a link to the existing shared use footway / cycleway recently constructed as part of the new housing development on Lower Cape.

The delivery of this particular phase of the scheme is dependent on the availability of funding, which will be determined in December 2013. If funding is secured, it is envisaged that construction works will be amalgamated with Phase 1, and therefore, similarly would be expected to commence in February 2014 and completed in April 2014.

All works are now complete on this phase of the scheme and fully open to the public both pedestrians and cyclists
