The Gunpowder Plotters

Guy Fawkes
Resistance to persecution against practising Catholics in England in the 16th and 17th Century, erupted in an outburst of Catholic extremism which came in the form of the Gunpowder Plot of November 1605.

A radical group of young men, tired of the persecution against their faith, conspired to blow up the new King James I along with his Government, and in the wake use foreign assistance to restore a Catholic monarch to the throne.

Only last gasp intervention stopped the plot from working when a leading Catholic, warned not to attend parliament, instead alerted the Government of the plans. Hours before the opening ceremony started, Guy Fawkes was caught in the cellars with the fuses clutched in his hands.

To mark the 400th anniversary of the Gunpowder plot, Warwickshire is hosting a series of events at the historic locations associated with the plot. These seek to discover who the men were, why did they plan such an astonishing act of treason, and how it became a significant date in our calendar even four centuries on.

Our webpages let you discover the plot for yourself and list what exciting Warwickshire events are planned.

"He told me the nature of the disease required so sharp a remedy, and asked me if I would give my consent.
I told him yes, in this and what else soever, if he resolved upon it, I would venture my life"
