 | The Gunpowder Plot and Warwickshire |
 | The Gunpowder plot has it all. Heroes, villains, outlaws on the run, dramatic shoot outs, betrayal, treason, torture and death.
|
 | | Resistance to persecution against practising Catholics in England in the 16th and 17th Century, erupted in an outburst of Catholic extremism which came in the form of the Gunpowder Plot of November 1605.
A radical group of young men, tired of the persecution against their faith, conspired to blow up the new King James I along with his Government, and in the wake use foreign assistance to restore a Catholic monarch to the throne. |
 | Only last gasp intervention stopped the plot from working when a leading Catholic, warned not to attend parliament, instead alerted the Government of the plans. Hours before the opening ceremony started, Guy Fawkes was caught in the cellars with the fuses clutched in his hands.
Warwickshire has many historic locations associated with the plot and with the leading Catholic families involved. Our webpages let you discover who were the plotters, why did they plan such an astonishing act of treason, and how it became a significant date in our calendar even four centuries on. |
