Building energy and water efficiency

Energy projects register

Our buildings offer a wide range of services and therefore require different kinds of premises. Buildings are vastly different in size, form and age; some are older, refurbished properties while others are purpose built. Such features impact on energy use and on opportunities for energy saving.

Several infrastructural improvements and behavioural change initiatives have been undertaken since 2003/4 to reduce our carbon emissions. As at January 2011 there were 93 projects included in the Energy Project Register funded through both the Salix Energy Efficiency Fund and the Climate Change Fund.

Projects in the project register include:

  • Valve insulation;
  • Loft insulation, Cavity Wall insulation;
  • Draught Proofing;
  • Power Perfector – voltage optimisation;
  • Secondary glazing;
  • Smart metering;
  • OWL home leaflet (pdf, 165Kb) - sub-metering;
  • Thermostatic radiator valves;
  • Zone controls;
  • Lighting replacements - T8 to T5;
  • New boilers;
  • Heating controls;
  • Eco Cooling;
  • Replacing sterilisers with dishwashers;
  • Direct gas fired radiators;
  • LED lighting;
  • Biomass boilers;
  • PV.

Nearly all buildings, including all schools are connected to the JEL /TREND building management system.

New PV system for Barrack St offices

In early 2012 Barrack St Offices roof has been insulated for the first time, re-felted and had a 47kW peak photovoltaic system installed. This is now generating electricity from daylight supplying power use directly in the Barrack St and Shire Hall complex. Read more...(pdf,609Kb)
