General advice for families

  • Directgov - Caring for a disabled child. - provides advice on issues such as childcare, financial support available, support groups and other services that are available to you if you are caring for a disabled child.
  • Contact a Family - is a national charity offering advice and support to the parents of all disabled children.
  • Warwickshire Children's Social Care - Services for children with disabilities. - Warwickshire Children's Social Care aims to support children and young people with disabilities in their own homes following assessment. These webpages provide information about the assessment process and the services available.
  • EDCM - Every Disabled Child Matters - is the campaign to get rights and justice for every disabled child, by raising the political profile of the needs of disabled children and their families within central and local government.
  • Ableize - offers advice and support to disabled people through their directory of services and support groups.
  • Warwickshire Parent Partnership Service - supports parents and carers of all Warwickshire children with special educational needs – whether they are of pre-school age, or at school in mainstream or special education.

  • Mencap - is the leading UK charity offering advice and support to people with learning disabilities and their families and carers.
  • National Autistic Society - is the leading UK charity for people with autism (including Asperger syndrome) and their families. We provide information, support and pioneering services, and campaign for a better world for people with autism.
  • Royal National Institute of Blind People - is the UK's leading charity for blind people. They offer advice and support to the almost two million people living in the UK with sight loss.
  • British Deaf Association - is the largest deaf organisation in the UK. It is run by deaf people for deaf people. They provide information about campaigns and services for deaf people.
  • Auditory Verbal UK - is a national charity which teaches deaf babies and children to listen and speak using Auditory Verbal Therapy, so that they can achieve their potential in life.

Leaflets and publications

There is now a wide range of information available to the parents or carers of a disabled child.

Contact a Family - provide a number of leaflets that you may find particularly useful on issues such as support with diagnosis, equipment, benefits, dealing with bullying, arranging holidays and preparing your child for adult life.
