Fire crews saved the life of a young driver after his car caught fire in a road traffic collision on Castle Hill, Saturday 30 January.

Firefighters from Warwickshire County Councils Fire and Rescue Service were called at 4.08am to a reported road traffic collision. On arrival crews were faced with a car on fire against the wall of Eastgate Church with one male driver trapped and unconscious.

Gaining access to the vehicle, crews managed to release the casualty and carry him to safety giving him oxygen and first aid. They then dealt with the vehicle fire and made the area safe.

Area Risk Officer, Jon Dixon said: “On arrival we were faced with a vehicle on fire with a male casualty trapped inside. The BA crew were able to release the male driver by pulling through the side window of the vehicle.

"He really was lucky to be alive and was lucky not to have been burnt, but if crews had not been so quick to get him out, then it could have been a very different story.”

Attending road traffic collisions is now a large part of a firefighters role. In the last year the Fire and Rescue Service attended 622 incidents, a number of which required casualties to be cut out of their vehicles.
