Fencing is being broken down at two locations on the Rugby Western Relief Road route, putting cyclists, pedestrians and children at risk.

Contractor Carillion has alerted Warwickshire County Council to a couple of problem sites where fencing is being damaged by people to gain access to the site.

Fencing is being broken down in Parkfield Road, and to gain access to a closed footpath between Paynes Lane and Somers Road.

Cllr Martin Heatley, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio holder with responsibility for highways, said: “A very large number of people are gaining unauthorised access to the site to get round the stopped up section of Parkfield Road. The fencing is not only costly to repair, but once down allows unaccompanied children unhindered access.”

Very soon major earthmoving operations will start, which will include the use of large dumpers and other items of heavy machinery. From the high positions of the cabs, the drivers do not have good close up visibility, and there could be a real possibility of a very serious accident occurring if unauthorised access continues.

The contractors will erect a more substantial steel palisade fence to make the site more secure, but Cllr Heatley stressed: “Please try to be patient and do not try and force an illegal access to the site. As soon as it is possible, a safe access across the site will be created for pedestrians and cyclists, but unfortunately this will not be for several months.”
