 | Parents or guardians have to “secure the education of their children” of “compulsory school age”, but this can be done either by regular attendance at school or “otherwise”. For most children this means that they attend a school but some parents do take on the responsibility of educating their own children. You may send your child to private education in independent schools (whether day or boarding) or take on the “duty to educate” them yourselves.
Under Section 7 of the 1996 Act parents of children not registered at schools need “to cause (the child) to receive efficient full time education suitable for his (or her) age, ability and aptitude (and to any special educational needs he or she may have) either by regular attendance at school or otherwise”.
If you want to educate your child at home and if your child has been to any school before, you need to write to ask for him or her to be “deregistered”. The Local Authority (LA) will then have to be satisfied that the arrangements you are making are satisfactory.
Warwickshire Local Authority has a leaflet on ‘Home Education’, explaining how you can deregister your child, and the LA Home Education process this is available from the Children's Services Education Social Work Service (01926) 742520. The Authority can give advice, but is not responsible for telling you how to do this.
