28/01/2012 - 29/12/2012 : Ryton Gardens Potato Day : Ryton Gardens

The UK’s longest running event dedicated solely to spuds will gear up for its 17th consecutive year in 2012, promising a real treat for potato growing enthusiasts! Potato Day on Saturday 28th January (members only) and Sunday 29 January 2012 (open to all), has been made famous by Garden Organic for almost two decades and has helped make potatoes a ‘must grow’ for many a Briton’s gardening year. As a result more of us are growing our own portion of the average 500* potatoes we eat each annually. With over 120 varieties, 40 of them organic, Potato Day at Ryton Gardens, Warwickshire, will give budding growers the chance to buy seed potatoes in packs or by the tuber, meaning anyone with enough space for a potato grow bag, or an entire allotment plot can get started right away.

28/01/2012 - 25/03/2012 : Just My Cup Of Tea exhibition : Nuneaton Museum & Art Gallery

What do you call it? A cuppa? Char? A brew? A cup of tea is a part of everyday life for the majority of people in modern Britain. In fact it is difficult to imagine life without it! This has not always been the case. Tea was once a luxury product that only the rich could afford. In fact it has taken several hundred years for tea to become our national drink. This exhibition, featuring unusual tea pots, cups and saucers and tea cadies from the museums own collection, will take you on a fascinating journey to discover how tea first came to Britain and what impact it has had on our society. Younger visitors will be able to try on hats for their very own Mad Hatter tea party, discover who is fastest in moving tea around the world with our Tea Clipper game and find out what a Chinese tea brick smells like!

14/01/2012 - 11/03/2012 : Found in the Fields an exhibition by Carry Akroyd : Nuneaton

Carry makes a welcome return to the museum with a selection of colourful hand drawn lithographs, oil on canvas and screen prints linking the contemporary landscape to the poetry of 19th Century poet John Clare (1793-1864). Carry Akroyd lives between the Nene Valley and the Fens, landscapes that feature in much of her work. An interest in history and nature drew her to the poetry of John Clare, which has been a constant source of inspiration, and in this exhibition Carry revisits her interest in Clare with a new collection of images incorporating text taken from John Clare’s poetry on his natural history observations. Carry' earlier series relating to the poetry of John Clare was shown here in Nuneaton in 2004, and in 2007 she exhibited her linocut illustrations to two of John Clare's books of poems: 'The Wood is Sweet' published by The John Clare Society, and 'The Shepherd's Calendar' published by Carcanet. Since she last exhibited here, she has written her own book 'Natures Powers & Spells – Landscape Change, John Clare and me', published by Langford Press, which reproduces images from two decades alongside text explaining her work’s relationship to the nineteenth century poet. Some of those images are in this exhibition. More recently, Carry has edited another book for Langford Press: 'Wildlife in Printmaking’.

01/02/2012 - 31/03/2012 : Rita Gabrowska - Shapes That Can Eat You : Kenilworth Wines

BRINK Present Rita Gabrowska at Kenilworth Wines A fascinating exhibition of works, where familiar symbols, objects and forms are merged to create imaginary and dreamlike 'mindscapes'. From 1st February until 31st March 2012, BRINK will be presenting the works of Rita Gabrowska at Kenilworth Wines. Gabrowska, who was born in Wroclaw, Poland, currently lives and works in Leamington Spa as a graphic designer, painter, digital artist, photographer and jewellery designer. As well as exhibiting in the UK, Poland and Italy, this talented and multi-faceted artist has five digital art works in the collection of the Dolnoslaskie Towarzystwo Zachety Sztuk Pieknych art institute. Reminiscent of the Suprematist movement, her works are sometimes self-referential or inspired by mass media symbolism, such as road signs, electronic components and man-made objects. The images emerge as ‘mindscapes’, where everyday objects are extrapolated from reality and reinterpreted in a new, autonomic world, composed of captivating colours and abstract forms. Since 2011, the artists has been focusing on digital compositions, with a strikingly modern yet Daliesque quality. In these works Gabrowska explores her fascination for geometric and organic abstract forms and their relationships to each other. “Traditional painting was always the main discipline in my carrier. I was taking photos, drawing and occasionally making digital compositions based on these studies, but I always painted on canvas, developing a world of abstract forms observed in reality. However, a few months ago this began to change”, states the artists. “Since I started working at Codemasters, I began to observe digital art more and more and became fascinated with the countless possibilities that the 2-D realm can offer an artist. Digital media opened up an amazing space in which to challenge my imagination and discover and create new worlds. No longer confined to the use of real and fragile materials, such as paper, canvas

Jive on down to The Bridge House Theatre for some 1950s retro fun with Oddsocks. Let Oddsocks blow the winter blues away and take you back to when life was good, the pennies counted more than the pounds and the swinging sixties was only a jive away!
