Twycross Zoo (The World Primate Centre) is a zoo in Twycross, in Leicestershire (on the A444 between the M42 and the A5), England, founded in 1963.
------------
It is notable for having the largest primate collection in the world, including breeding populations of bonobos (the UK's only collection of our closest living relatives), chimpanzees, gorillas, orang utans, penguins, camels, and otters along with large numbers of monkey and lemur species.
The zoo also holds collections of many other animals - many on the endangered lists. There are elephants, big cats, sealions, birds, wildfowl, etc. Twycross Zoo is currently undergoing many exciting developments - a new Tropical House has recently been opened (allowing visitors to walk into the exhibit amongst the animals), the modern elephant enclosure is being developed further and a new bird aviary and wildfowl exhibition are now nearing completion (Summer 2006). The zoo welcomes nearly 500,000 visitors a year and plays an active part in education and conservation on a local, national and international scale.
