Nash's House & New Place, Stratford-upon-Avon

Stratford upon Avon, Stratford

Thomas Nash was the first husband of Shakespeare's granddaughter Elizabeth. Original Tudor furniture, paintings and tapestries decorate the rooms. On the upper level, in the museum, an exciting new exhibition opens in May 2006 telling the story of Shakespeare Complete Works, from its first publication in 1623 to the present.

Adjacent to Nash's House is the site of New Place, the property Shakespeare purchased in 1597 and where he died. Although only foundations remain, his original estate is now preseved as a picturesque garden space. The Elizabethan Knott Garden was created in 1919-20 which incorporates an interweaving design created from dwarf herbs or shrubs where flowers fill the spaces between the outline pattern. The Great Garden leads on with box yew hedges, expanses of lawn, beautiful flowerbeds and borders. The garden is an attractive haven situated in the centre of Stratford-upon-Avon - the perfect spot for poetry reading or a picnic!
