Question symbol When are school holidays?

Answer symbol School holiday dates are approved by Cabinet with efforts made to co-ordinate with neighbouring authorities and other relevant groups.

All schools have five days when teachers are undertaking professional development but pupils are not in school. Two of these days are set by the Local Authority, with the other three set by each school.

Dates below include additional teacher days when pupils will not attend school but teachers will.

Full details of school holidays up to 2009/10 and details of when schools are closed for the teacher days they arrange are available at Click here for holiday dates

Parents who wish to take their children from school in term time, for example for a family holiday, should first apply to the Headteacher of their child's school for permission. . Parents should be aware that there is no automatic right for holidays during term time, and permission will only be given in exceptional circumstances. No more than ten days can be granted in any academic year, and such decisions can only be taken by a school's Headteacher.
