Civil partnerships in Warwickshire

What is a civil partnership?

A civil partnership allows same sex couples to have their relationships legally recognised. After registration couples have the same rights as a married couple in areas such as tax, social security, inheritance and workplace benefits.

How can we arrange a civil partnership?

A civil partnership may be registered at any of our registration offices or at an approved venue. Once you have decided on a venue and date please telephone us to check availability. A provisional booking can be made up to two years prior to your ceremony and a non-refundable deposit is requested at the time of booking.

Before your ceremony can take place you must each give legal notice of your intended partnership to the local registration office in the district where you live.

What happens at our legal notice appointment?

You will need to make an appointment at the local registration office in the district where you both live.

You will need to produce the following documents:

  • passports as evidence of identity and nationality;
  • some proof of residence in the form of a recent utility bill, council tax bill, bank statement or any other form of official documentation;
  • evidence showing how any previous marriages or civil partnerships have ended;
  • evidence of any name changes.

The notices of intended partnership will be placed on public display for a period of 15 clear days. After this, the partnership can be formed. The partnership can be formed in any local authority, irrespective of the residence of the couple, and can also be formed in one of our approved venues.

Do we need to have a ceremony?

You do not need by law to have a ceremony in addition to the registration but you are more than welcome to do so. It can be a special way of marking your relationship and commitment to each other.

Photographs and videos

It can be very distracting if guests are taking photographs during the ceremony. We therefore request that guests refrain from taking photographs until the ceremony is completed when an opportunity to take photographs will be available. The ceremony may be videoed but you are requested to make prior arrangements with the superintendent registrar.
