Children's University

The Children's University™ is a national organisation with a growing number of local Children's Universities across the country. Any child, aged 5 to 14 years, can join and take part in exciting activities and learning experiences with their 'Passport to Learning'. Children will collect stamps as they go, for every hour of learning they take part in, working towards national awards.

Activities

Activities include any taking place outside school hours, which:

  • your child attends voluntarily;
  • is recognised as a Children's University Learning Destination - which means it offers high quality learning;
  • can be linked to a higher education institution somewhere in the country.

These activities may be one-off workshops, ongoing activities or projects such as theatre performances.

As well as school activities, we will also validate time spent at visitor attractions focused on learning, such as museums, country parks and outdoor activity centres. Also participation in clubs and societies which might include music and drama groups.

The Passport to Learning

The 'Passport to Learning' retails at only £2 and is available through schools.

Children collect hours in their passports for registered activities. The activity leader will stamp or sign the passport to show the hours taken part in the activity.

If the passport has been forgotten, please ask the learning destination for a voucher to confirm the hours. Then return the voucher to your child's school.

You and your child are responsible for taking care of your Passport to Learning. In addition, in the back section of the passport, children can collect stamps/stickers for activities that are not registered with Children's University, for example, a trip out or a special award.

Please contact your child's school or the Children's University office for more details.

Learning destinations

A wide range of learning destinations across the country have been recognized as providing high quality learning opportunities.

Examples of both local and national validated learning destinations:

  • The Houses of Parliament
  • Herbert Art Gallery, Coventry
  • Kingsbury Outdoor Education Centre

The list of schools and organisations is growing. The National Children's University website is regularly updated with details of new learning destinations as they join. You can also contact your child's school for local details.
