| Bikeability in Warwickshire Bikeability is the new cycling training scheme for the 21st century which aims to get more people cycling, more safely, more often. | Cycling is healthy and fun, but it's important to learn how to do it safely. Children now have the chance to get their Bikeability award as part of a national scheme that is being rolled out across England. Warwickshire County Council is an accredited provided of the scheme and is working towards providing every child in Warwickshire with the opportunity to have Bikeability training. There are three levels: Level 1 will offer basic bike handling skills in a controlled environment away from roads. This course consists of 2 hours of training and is aimed at trainees aged 8 or over in Y4 and Y5. Training normally takes place on a playground or other suitably sized smooth, hard-surfaced area. Level 2 will teach children to cycle planned routes on minor roads offering real cycling experience. This course consists of 6 hours of training and is aimed at trainees aged 9 years or over in Y5 and above and takes place on approved training routes, near to the school. Level 3 will ensure cyclists are able to manage all traffic conditions. This course is available to secondary school pupils who have successfully completed Level 2 and will be tailored to the individual cyclist and their cycling environment. Who does the instructing? The training is delivered by our teams of directly-employed professional cycle instructors, based around the county. All necessary equipment including cones and signs are provided as well as high visibility bibs for trainees for the duration of the training. Trainees will need their own roadworthy bikes and we strongly recommend fitted helmet. How much does it cost? Cost for school based courses is: Level 1 - £6 per pupil Level 2 - £21 per pupil Level 3 - £21 per pupil All pupils who successfully complete a course receive a certificate and badge. Books, workbooks are also provided for Level 2 and Level 3 training. How can I apply for a course? If you are a parent, contact your child's school.
