| Road Safety Education Services to Schools Activities and events from Y7 to Y11 and above, with Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) and Citizenship links continue to be expanded, with initiatives for most year groups. Year 7 Year 7 classroom activities can be delivered or initiated to help pupils understand why they have just entered the most vulnerable age group as cyclists and pedestrians, and how they can help reduce the risks for themselves. A whole year group presentation, or a session for each form or PSHE group may be appropriate for students. Sessions are planned to suit the needs of the school and students. For further information on Year 7 work call 01926 418062 Driving Ambitions The award-winning Driving Ambitions sessions have also been running successfully with progression from Year 8 right through to Year 12. Now in the fifth academic year of this scheme, we have over 80% take-up from our secondary schools and colleges. For further information on Driving Ambitions workshops call 01926 418037. Year 8 - Being Prepared is Being Safe One workshop - up to 60 minutes duration. The workshop will enable students to: Identify the dangers when travelling. Appreciate the possible impact that distractions such as mobile phones, ipods, hoodies and friends have when using the road. Understand the importance of in-car safety, including seatbelts, and distractions which can influence the driver. Take positive action to ensure they 'Arrive Alive'.Year 9 - Think Speed, Think Safety One workshop - up to 60 minuste duration. The workshop will enable the student to: Appreciate the road traffic collisions are events that can happen at anytime to anyone but that certain people are at greater risk. Understand the potential and far reaching consequences of crashes. Understand the common causes of crashes and explore ways in which they could be avoided. Understand their responsibilities as passengers and future drivers in the prevention of road traffic collisions.Year 10 - Hitting the road safely Two workshops - up to 60 minutes duration each. The workshops will enable the student to: Appreciate the vulnerability of the human body and the impact a collision can have. Recognise the increased risk factor faced by young people. Explore outside influences on our attitude to road use. Understand the potential impact poor driver decisions and choices has on self and other road users. Identify hazards. Understand the vulnerability, risks and importance of compliance regarding clothing, docmumentation and laws when riding a powered two wheeler.Year 11 - Active Strategy to Reduce Accidents (ASTRA) Four workshops duration up to 60 minutes. The workshops will enable the student to: Appreciate their vulnerability in their first years of driving. Identify the common causes of road crashes. Appreciate the responsibilities of car ownership/driving and measures that should be taken to ensure safety. Apprieciate the consequences of inappropriate driving and understand the grief and suffering caused by road accidents. Recognise the consequences of driving under the influence of drink or drugs. Have an awareness of vehicle safety design and the different risks encountered on various road types. The importance of car maintenance and correct documentation. Be aware of external influences on driving.Year 12 - Know before you go Four theory workshops - up to 60 minutes. Four practical workshops - up to 60 minutes (optional). The workshops will enable the student to: Understand the impact of experience and attitude on driver behaviour. Understand the legal requirements associated withowning and running a vehicle and penalties for non compliance. Appreciate the importance of being physically fit to drive. Understand the importance of driving at an appropriate speed for the conditions. Recognise the need for good vehicle maintenance and the impact this can have on safety. Accept responsibility that comes with driving. Demonstrate basic control of a bike or car and knowledge/awareness of hazards. |
