Road Safety - Engineering
Alternatives to casualty reduction based traffic schemes

The Road Safety Engineering Team prioritises and treats those sites and routes that have a high number of personal injury crashes. However, every year other teams within the County Council undertake various road improvement works which can improve the safety of the road.

There are many different types of Safety Engineering Measures
Road improvement schemes can also be funded by:

Budget allocated to Area Committee

Each year the Council’s Area Committee have a limited budget to spend on transport related schemes. A County Councillor, in competition with other Councillors, may wish to make a bid for funding to improve a section of road.

Developer Funded Schemes

A developer may be required to provide funding to help reduce any potential undesirable side effects caused by their development in order to get planning consent (Section 106 Planning Agreement). If for example a new housing estate is being planned, then it is possible that the developer will have to improve some aspect of the surrounding environment that might be affected adversely by a new development i.e. improvements to the estate access or traffic calming.
