- A history of casualties.
- A speed abuse problem.
- A suitable location for the camera that is both visible and safe to enforce from.
Exceptional camera sites (SpeedAware Enforcement)
Government guidelines allow a proportion of enforcement (15% of total camera time) at sites that do not have a history of personal injury crashes, but where is public concern about the speed of traffic. The County Council can set up new ‘exceptional’ sites through it’s SpeedAware Enforcement scheme where there are high recorded vehicle speeds and where there is a suitable location to enforce from. This type of temporary enforcement is supported by a wide range of publicity material through our SpeedAware campaign.
How do you decide if a site qualifies for exceptional enforcement?
We will only enforce if:
- Speed readings show a significant speed abuse problem or other factors suggest enforcement would be effective - for example a high number of collisions.
- There is a suitable location to enforce from.
How much enforcement will we get?
We receive a high number of requests, so any exceptional enforcement through SpeedAware has to be limited and temporary.
How can I find out if a road qualifies for enforcement?
Any requests for this type of enforcement needs to be made by a community representative such as a Parish Council or County Councillor. When we receive a formal request we will look to see if the location meets the criteria for a core or exceptional camera site.
We receive lots of requests so it can take some time for us to do this, but we will keep the representative up to date with progress and let them know the outcome as soon as possible.
