Cycle Training

Provision for Schools

In line with Warwickshire County Council’s commitment to encourage more pupils to walk/cycle to school, safely, we provide pupils with the opportunity of undertaking cycle training.

All schools are offered training courses, run by Warwickshire Road Safety trained instructors. If your child's school does not offer cycle training, please contact them and express your interest in the service. Cycle training can not only increase safety, but by encouraging more pupils to cycle, can help reduce congestion around schools.

Level 1 Bikeability

The Level 1 Course is aimed at pupils aged 8 years and over in Y4 and Y5 and is offered to all primary/junior schools. It consists of 2 hours of training conducted off-road, and is designed to cover the following areas:
  • Bicycle safety check.
  • Bicycle control.
  • Personal safety – helmets – clothing.
  • Dangers – themselves – others.
The training is offered during school time. Pupils who complete the course receive a certificate and can go on to take the Level 2 training when they are 9 years or over in Y5 and above. Fee £6 per pupil.

Level 2 Bikeability

This course is designed to develop road sense, awareness of traffic dangers and to improve the trainees ability to ride safely. It is conducted on-road and is aimed at pupils aged 9 years or over, in Y5 or above. It is offered to all primary, junior and secondary schools. Pupils are assessed during the final session and receive a certificate if they pass. The course costs £20 per pupil for six hours of training.

Courses are offered to schools from March to July and September and October. Sessions are available during school time, after school, or secondary schools have the option of Saturday mornings.

All courses are run by fully trained instructors to the correct pupil/instructor ratio. We provide all training equipment including high visibility bibs for pupils and any books/workbooks, paperwork appropriate to the course as well as feedback, certificates and badges.

Safe Cycle Scheme

Offered free to secondary/high schools, the aim of this scheme is, not only to encourage pupils to cycle to school, but to use safe and well maintained bicycles. Our instructors visit the school and check the bikes of pupils wishing to participate. Owners of bicycles found to have faults receive a written report.
