World and Olympic Champion wins Warwick Cycle Races

World and Olympic Champion Ed Clancy MBE was first across the finish line in front of Shire Hall on Sunday as he won the 2010 Warwick Cycle Races.

Clancy won an exciting sprint finish against Jeroen Janssen in second and James Moss in third in the climax to the day’s racing organised by Warwickshire County Council and British Cycling. The trio were presented with their prizes from the Mayor of Warwick, Cllr Michael Kinson.

The event included races for youth categories from under-16s to under-8s, a category three race for club riders and a race for emergency services personnel. There was also a 10k unicycle race and lots of family fun including face-painting, juggling and music from steel band
Pandemonium.

Ed Clancy can now add the Warwick Cycle Races crown to his collection of medals. In August 2008, Clancy was a member of the Olympic team pursuit squad which broke the world record in the heats to beat Russia for the ride-off for silver and gold. On the way to winning gold the following day the British team broke their own world record when beating Denmark by 6.7 seconds. Clancy also won gold medals in the team and individual pursuits at the World Championships in Manchester.

Laura Vesty, Sustainable Travel Officer at Warwickshire County Council, said: “This years cycle races was a huge success with thousands of people turning out to watch top British cyclists and enjoy the cycling related activities. The best thing about the event is that it really inspires people to enjoy cycling and it was fantastic to see many people cycle to the event."

The emergency services race was held for the first time and the winner received his prize from Warwickshire’s Chief Fire Officer Graeme Smith.

Mr Smith said: “It was a tremendous day and I thoroughly enjoyed watching the cyclists speeding round the town centre streets – and obviously I was urging on the fire and rescue guys to win the emergency services race.

“Warwick Cycle Races is a wonderful reminder that it is fun to ride a bike and anyone can have a go.”

British Cycling and Warwickshire County Council organise the event and would like to thank the sponsors TravelWise, Carillion, Telent and Hinckley and South Wigston Cycle Centre without which the event could not take place.
