Day 1 –
History and Heritage

Start the day off with learning about the local history of Warwick at the Warwickshire Museum in the Market Square. Find out about the great fire in 1694 that destroyed many of the timber framed medieval buildings and also about the great gates and town wall that used to protect the old town. Also visit the Tourist Information Centre for further details on the town, possible other things to do and maps of the town centre.

Warwick Market is a lively, bustling place with many different types of market stalls and shops

Walk over to St Mary’s Church and see the tombs of people that have changed the course of England’s history such as Richard Beauchamp, Earl of Warwick and Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester. Feeling fit? Climb the tower and get magnificent views across the town and surrounding countryside from the top.

On the way over to Warwick Castle go via the historic Lord Leycester Hospital. Walk back through the Market Square and along Swan Street to this historic building, grabbing a quick bite to eat from any of the local bakeries or coffee shops, such as at The Pasty Place that sells a variety of very tasty pasties! See our Food and Drink pages for the Eating Out in Warwick Guide.

After soaking up the history of the Hospital relax in the fantastic garden and have a refreshment break while soaking up the sun.

Lord Leycester Market

Ready for some walking? Warwick Castle requires a good 3 -4 hours or more to take it all in. There’s so much to see and do such as the Kingmaker Exhibition, The Dungeons, climbing the towers or Ethelfleda’s Mound and not forgetting the magnificent grounds and the river. It is always buzzing whatever the time of year but expect the summer months to be the busiest. Expect to see jousting contests or even the trebuchet in action!

For a well deserved cup of tea after leaving the castle stop off at any of the restaurants or tea rooms on the High Street, such as the Aylesford Hotel or Ask Restaurant.

Warwick Castle Keep

If you’ve had enough of the crowds retire to the Mill Street Gardens for a quiet sit down amongst a beautifully kept English garden overlooking the river Avon, or even pop over to St Nicholas Park and hire out a boat to relax on the river.

See out the rest of the afternoon with a spot of shopping amongst the many antique shops and independent stores along Smith St and centre of Warwick.

For an evening meal visit any of the excellent restaurants or pubs such as the Castle Balti for a good hot curry or the Art Kitchen for excellent modern Thai cuisine. See our Food and Drink pages for the Eating Out in Warwick Guide.

Warwick town centre is packed with many charming pubs and inns that sell local ales. In the summertime places such as the Zetland Arms in Church Street are very popular as they have large beer gardens in which to relax. There is also the Titled Wig and Rose & Crown just off the Market Square. See the Warwick Area map of the Gastromap for further details.

Day 2 –
Activities & Shopping

Start the day with a spot of shopping within Hatton Country World. This art and craft centre is home to 25 craft and speciality gift shops. See such delights as the Hatton Toffee Shop for hand-made fudge! Also on-site is the Hatton Farm Village - a must for a fun family day out with animals, adventure playground, demonstrations and all-out activity to keep the kids occupied.

Now back to Warwick and a day at the races! Warwick Racecourse has racing every other weekend during the summer months and is a stylish place to go to pass a few hours. If you’re feeling a little more energetic have a quick 9-holes at the nearby Warwick Golf Course or try the driving range to practice that swing.

If more danger is required visit Wedgnock Rifle Range for a spot of clay pigeon shooting or even have a go at paintball or quad-biking.

Round off your stay by having dinner out of town overlooking the Warwickshire countryside such as at the Saxon Mill on Coventry Road that has great views over the nearby ruins of Guy's Cliffe House. See our Food and Drink pages for the Eating Out in Warwick Guide.
