Road Safety - Speed
Speed Limits in Warwickshire

The County Council is responsible for speed limits on all public roads, except motorways and trunk roads which are the responsibility of the Highways Agency.

Can a speed limit be lowered?

Most drivers choose their speed based on how they judge the appearance of the road. Therefore, lowering a speed limit without engineering or enforcement is rarely enough to reduce overall vehicle speeds.

We may be able to lower a speed limit if it will help us to achieve a reduction in road casualties or if it complies with the County Council's speed limit policy.

30mph Speed Limit

The Council has commenced a review of speed limits on all A and B class roads. Most highway authorities are undertaking this procedure following Department for Transport guidelines on setting local speed limits. Communities affected by this review will be fully consulted as the review progresses.

Wherever possible, our aim is to establish a 30mph speed limit in all Villages. Warwickshire County Council is therefore carrying out a systematic review of village speed limits on rural roads, which seeks to introduce sustainable speed limits in villages. This is called the Village Speed Limit Review. All villages in Warwickshire that do not have a 30mph speed limit will be reviewed as part of this process.

Warwickshire County Council Speed Limit Policy

The Warwickshire County Council Speed Limit Policy, which has been agreed between the County and the Police is based on national guidelines from the Department for Transport, and emphasises partnership between Warwickshire Police and the County Council.

Drivers MUST NOT exceed the maximum speed limits for the road and for their vehicle.
Road Safety

It is primarily a Police responsibility to enforce the law when a speed limit is abused using fixed or mobile safety cameras at locations, which meet strict criteria, based on casualty history.

Street lights usually mean that there is a 30mph speed limit unless there are signs showing another limit.
