2009 Cycle Races Competition Winners |
Bike winner inspired to start triathlons
The winner of the top prize of a Dawes Racing Bike at the Warwick Cycle Races competition said the prize has inspired her to start racing in triathlons.
The competition concluded a day of exciting racing around the winding streets of Warwick with Ian Wilkinson, winner of the Men’s Elite Cycling Race drawing the winning entry.
Julie Pate, a mobile beautician from the Village of Ashorne near Warwick won the Dawes Racing bike, donated by Hinckley and South Wigston Cycle Centre.
Julie said “I did the two castles run back in May and had been considering having a go at a triathlon but had got no further. Winning this bike is just the thing I need to start training.”
She said: “I love cycling because it makes me feel and look good and is great fun and exercise. It’s a great activity that absolutely anyone can do regularly to stay healthy.”
Meanwhile the Pyramids Gym voucher went to West Midlands Firefighter Sean Carey, who lives in Tamworth.
On the day Sean raced in the 4th category race for CC Giro cycling team. He entered on the day just five minutes before the race, but unfortunately didn't get his bike to the start line in time and missed the start of his race. So he was chasing at the back for most of it but he said "I was just gald he got a chance to compete.
"It’s great to win the prize, and could be very useful to get in the gym as part of my winter training.”

As well as a packed day of activities and racing action, there were also competitions galore at this year’s Warwick Cycle Races, and the winners can now be revealed.
The first prizewinner was Tony Goldsby, a local Warwick businessman, who is now the proud owner of a Merida Racing bike (courtesy of Hinkley Cycle Centre).
He is delighted with this as this month he is competing in the Warwick Triathlon and says the bike is perfect for this purpose.
Meanwhile Andy Smith from Lillington won the Gold Pass for Warwick District Council Leisure Centres and Helen Hill won the four adult day passes to Warwick Castle. She said she’s never been there before so was excited by the prospect of having a free day out.

Cllr Martin Heatley, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “We had yet another record year with Warwick Cycle Races and I’m sure that the amount of support we had from various organisations in the way of prizes and sponsorship played a
big part in this.
“As well as the prize donors already mentioned, I’d like to thank the race sponsors the University of Warwick; Chiltern Railways; South Wigston and Hinckley Cycle Centre; Massey Ferguson and TravelWise.
“Plus thanks to all those who had a stand at the event on the day: Action 21; TravelWise; Warwickshire PCT (where members of public could blend their own fruit juice using pedal power on the blender vendor); Hinckley Cycle Centre; Go Ride, who provided slalom course for children to try out; and High 5 who provided energy drinks and snack bars for the riders.
“Without all this support the event would not be the growing success it is.” |
