Road Markings
There are two main types of road markings - advisory and mandatory.
Advisory Markings
Broken (or dotted) white lines.
These mark the centre of the carriageway.
Short lines and long gaps are to help drivers keep in the traffic lane.
Long lines and short gaps are a warning that there is a hazard ahead and drivers should not cross the line.

Centre of carriageway and warning lines
Continuous or broken lines at the side of the road mark the edge of the carriageway.
They are also used to mark lay-bys and junctions.

Edge of carriageway lines
Angled lines (chevrons and hatching) show areas of the carriageway which drivers should not enter.
They are used to separate lines of traffic at places such as junctions and bends.

Hatched markings
Yellow zigzag markings are used at places such as school entrances.
They may also be used at fire and ambulance station exits.

Mandatory Markings
Double white lines.
Double white lines are either two parallel continuous lines or a continuous line with a broken (dotted) line alongside it. If the continuous line is closer to the vehicle, drivers MUST NOT cross the continuous line except under certain circumstances.
If the broken line is closer to the vehicle, overtaking is allowed if it is safe. The vehicle must return to the correct side of the road before the next continuous line is reached.
