London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games

With the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games set to boost the building sector nationally by more than £8 Billion, the impact on the Midlands is a potential multi-million pound bonanza for companies based here. However not just the building sector will benefit from the Games, as many services needed will be tendered out to UK companies.

A staggering amount of work for all of the infrastructure will be sourced from outside London with the opportunities for Midland based companies being some of the highest.

2012 Tourism & Culture Opportunities

The County Council has been working hard to ensure that Warwickshire benefits from the UK’s hosting of the Games. We have established a 2012 Opportunities Group with partners across the county and also in Coventry.

Tourism is one aspect this group is addressing and a seminar was held in July for local businesses and other organisations with interests in the forthcoming Games. A report of the event which clarifies timescales and raises ideas for action is available be clicking the link below (this opens up a pdf copy of the report).

Eleven venues in Coventry and Warwickshire to be 2012 Training Camps

A third of the 33 venues across the West Midlands, hand-picked to host overseas athletes ahead of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, are in Coventry and Warwickshire.

All have been selected to make the PGTC Guide that LOCOG will deliver to all National Olympic Committees and National Paralympic Committees in Beijing this summer.

Only 33 from the whole West Midlands Region were selected so to have a third of this is a fantastic achievement.

For more details see the press release on the following page.

London 2012 procurement programme - August 2006

London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOCOG), which is responsible for the event operations (ticketing, seating, marketing etc) will not be procuring goods and services until 2009, that is until after the Beijing Games, but will then continue to let contracts until 2012 and beyond.

The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA), which is responsible for the physical infrastructure in East London has announced its high level Delivery Programme for the Olympic Park. Procurement is starting now and will continue until the end of 2008 for the different elements of the programme. The prime contract for the main stadium has just been announced.

The ODA has also published its draft procurement strategy document which includes guidance on the key principles for contractors (Health, Safety & Environment Policy, Innovation, etc). While there is an intention to open up participation to smaller companies and regionally-based companies, there is currently no requirement on the prime contractors to disclose their sub-contracting and supply chain arrangements.

There is now an option on the London 2012 web-site to register for updates and alerts on LOCOG and ODA tender opportunities.
