Barbastelle Bat Project

Funded by SITA

The Warwickshire Barbastelle Project is a SITA Trust funded project lead by Warwickshire County Council and Dr Jon Russ, in association with members of the Warwickshire Bat Group (WBG), The Bat Conservation Trust, Natural England and a team of volunteers.

To summarise, the project aims to consolidate and increase the understanding of the ecology of the barbastelle bat in woodland in the south of the county, which is of national importance as a breeding location. Also it aims to enhance the woodland and the surrounding area for the benefit of barbastelle bats.

Previously a radio-tracking study of barbastelles in the woodland was carried out in 2009 by Warwickshire Bat Group. this identified roosting sites os bats, including a significant maternity roost. A number of bat boxes have been erected int he woodland as a result of this preliminary work and are monitored by WBG.

The surrent project will aim to achieve three main outcomes, these being: to gain a better knowledge and understanding oth the barbastelle bat's breeding cycle; to consolidate and increase the connectivity and habitat quality of the local area; and to publicise the findings to a local and national audience for the benefit of barbastelle conservation and best practice. The study will involve detector surveys; trapping; and radio-tracking surveys.

The survey work for this current project will be undertaken during the summers of 2012 and 2013.

Would you like to be involved?

Ideally we are looking for someone to assist with the management of the surveys and radio-tracking work on a voluntyary basis. It would ideally suit someone looking for a BSc/MSc project. If you are interested, or know anyone who might be, please get in touch with the project officer for more information (contact details below).

There will be many opportunities to be involved in other aspects of the project, from a community based information day to habitat enhancement work towards the end of the project. We would also w=welcome help from individuals who would like to assist with conservation efforts and enhance habitats for this rare species in Warwickshire.
