Where to go for Contraceptives and Advice
Any of the following offer contraceptive help and advice:
- A Doctor’s Surgery (GP)
A doctor / practice nurse will be able to offer free and confidential contraceptive help and advice. They will give you a prescription to get free contraception from the chemist.
- Another Doctor of Your Choice
Most doctors will see you for contraception, advice, and support even if you are not registered with them.
- A Specialist Young Person's Clinic
Click here for more information about Specialist Young Person's Clinics, including where to find them in Coventry and Warwickshire.
- Family Planning and Sexual Health Clinics
Young people are able to attend general family planning clinics as well which are open to people of all ages. The service is free and confidential.
- A Brook Advisory Centre Website: www.brook.org.uk
Brook Advisory Centres offer free and confidential sex advice, contraception and a counselling service for young people aged under 25. People under the age of 16 are welcome. There are no centres in Coventry or Warwickshire but there is a centre in Birmingham which would be happy to see you and several satellite centres in the Birmingham area. For more information about Brook Advisory Centres call (0121) 643 5341
- A Chemist or Pharmacy
They sell condoms, caps, spermicides and sponges. The pharmacist is highly trained and they can give advice on types of contraceptives and the effects other drugs may have on the pill. Some pharmacists provide free emergency contraception following a short consultation – a list of the pharmacies involved in the schemes. Emergency hormonal contraception (EHC) can also be purchased at a cost of approximately £26. EHC cannot be sold to under sixteens – it is only available free to under sixteens through the accredited pharmacist schemes (see emergency contraception). The pharmacist will also be able to tell you where to go for free contraceptive advice. Some pharmacies offer pregnancy tests at a cost.
