Sexual Health Choices and Consequences |
Having sex using NO contraception at all means you may be at risk of an unintended pregnancy and/or Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)
STI Services

 | CAUSE | SYMPTOMS |
Chlamydia
and non-specific genital infections | The Chlamydia bacteria. | Unusual discharge from vagina or penis. Swelling around sex organs. Pain when peeing. Often no signs at all. |

TREATMENT |
| If untreated can leave women unable to have children. Treat with antibiotics. |
|  |
 | CAUSE | SYMPTOMS |
Gonorrhoea
(the 'clap' or 'dose')
 | Bacteria that live in moist areas of the body. | Women - unusual vaginal discharge, stomach pain.
Men - yellow discharge from penis.
Men or women - pain when peeing, sore throat. Is passed via oral sex. Most women have no symptoms. 90% of men do. |

TREATMENT |
| If untreated can leave women unable to have children. Treat with antibiotics. |

 | CAUSE | SYMPTOMS |
Thrush
 | A yeast that many people have on their skin and usually causes no problems. If it multiplies too much it causes problems. Not necessarily caused by sex. | Women - thick, white discharge from vagina, pain when peeing, itching around vagina.
Men - Sometimes a rash and/or soreness under foreskin of the penis. |

TREATMENT |
| Women are given pessaries (soft tablets, that are put into the vagina) and cream to stop the itching. Men are given cream. |

Genital Warts
 | Very similar to the one that produces skin warts. | Growth or warts anywhere on the genital areas. |

TREATMENT |
| Special lotion or cream but larger ones are cut, burnt, or frozen off. |

Trich
(Trichomonasis Vaginalis or TV)
 | Small parasite that infects the vagina and urethra (the tube through which urine passes). | Yellow or white, smelly discharge from vagina or penis. May be no symptoms at all, especially in men. |

TREATMENT |
| A course of tablets taken by mouth. |
|  |
STIs affect both men and women.
Only condoms/femidoms can help prevent both STIs and pregnancy.
