Respect Yourself
Help! I Think I Might Be Pregnant!

If you have had sex with out using contraception or you think something may have gone wrong with your contraception there is a chance that you could be pregnant.

(If you have not had sex it is very unlikely that you are pregnant. Although, if sperm get around the outside of the vagina, they can swim in and get you pregnant.)

Usually your periods stop when you are pregnant, although this isn’t always the case.

If it is less than 5 days since you had sex and if you don’t want to get pregnant, then you should find out about emergency contraception (the sooner the better)

If you think you may be pregnant you should do a pregnancy test

Pregnancy tests are usually only accurate from the day that your period is due or afterwards. If you only had sex a few days ago it will not be possible to tell if you are pregnant yet.

If your periods aren’t regular it is probably worth talking to a doctor or nurse to decide whether or not you need to do a test.

You can get pregnancy tests from doctors and family planning clinics. You can also buy them from chemists and other shops.

If your test is positive (you are pregnant)...

You have 3 main options that you will need to think very carefully about:

1.You could have the baby and bring it up yourself. You will find this much easier if you have support from friends and family and your partner.

2.You could have an abortion. You have the right to free, confidential abortion even if you are under 16.

3.You could continue with the pregnancy and give the baby up for adoption.

Deciding what to do about a pregnancy can be very difficult. Any of the options could affect you for the rest of your life. It is important that you make the choice that is right for you.

You have the right to confidential advice and support however young you are. Contact your local family planning clinic or BPAS ( British Pregnancy Advisory Service) to access counselling and support.
