Eco Schools

Waste
Schools produce a large amount of waste each week which is sent to landfill sites.
  • Landfills produce methane which is a greenhouse gas and is thought to contribute to global warming.
  • They also produce a toxic liquid called leachate which can sometimes leak into groundwater and water courses causing pollution.
  • Additionally they take up valuable space in the countryside.
Schools in Warwickshire spend around £383,000 a year in disposing of waste, so a reduction in waste will provide immediate savings to schools.

The European Union (EU) has implemented legislation to reduce these environmental impacts. New laws in England aim to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill and increase recycling rates, therefore helping to protect the environment.

Landfill

By reducing their waste, schools can save money on waste disposal costs and also contribute to a healthier environment.
