In order to progress the development of traffic management proposals the County Council has supported a Forum of stakeholders in Warwick, who are working together to generate a consensus on how Warwick’s traffic problems should be tackled.
The Forum membership includes residents’ and traders' groups in the town centre as well as Warwickshire County Council. The Forum's remit is: To act as a means by which everybody with a major interest in Warwick can work to reach a consensus on how to reduce the impact of traffic on the town centre
Although financially supported by the County Council, the Forum is independent and will advise on the best way to deal with transport and traffic problems in Warwick town centre.
The Forum has developed a vision and objectives which it wishes to see developed. These have been supported in principle by the County Council and are available to down load by clicking here.
A Number of Interim Traffic Management Scheme measures have been identified
The Interim Traffic Management Scheme measures which have already been endorsed by Warwick Area Committee and which further traffic management measures will build on, include:
· A revised and improved bus interchange to improve bus reliability - a design has been developed and will be consulted on in detail with those affected during 2007
· Variable car park management signing to indicate where spaces are available - a scheme has been designed and will be implemented in 2007
· 2 footway widening schemes to address narrow footways on Bowling Green Street and Theatre St - these will be considered in the context of wider traffic management measures
· A 20 mph speed limit and traffic calming on Friars St & Hampton St - the best approach to delivering this, alongside a similar scheme in West Street, is currently being considered
· 2 new pedestrian crossings - a crossing in Friars Street has recently been implemented and a further crossing in West Street is due to be implemented in mid 2007
· A new cycleway and footway to Warwick Technology Park from Myton Road - construction of this, along with an extension to Leamington, started in early 2007 and will be complete soon
· Investigation of the feasibility of a Schools Drop and Ride scheme where pupils traveling by car are dropped off outside the town centre and ferried in by bus - this has been investigated and, dependant on the involvement of the private schools, may be feasible. Further discussions will be held as proposals are developed
