Path Changes

The Definitive Map (legal record of Public Rights of Way) is only changed by a legal order. There are two main types:
  • Public Path Orders - which create, divert or extinguish paths.
  • Definitive Map Modification Orders - which record existing rights of way (often historic ones) and are used to correct errors and omissions in the Definitive Map
Under some circumstances, orders can be made by district or borough councils, or by the government. This website does not include those orders.

Current Orders

Consultation is carried out on all the orders before they become final, and orders are held on deposit for a period of time during which representations or objections can be made.
Current orders.
For any enquiries about a current case, please call the case officer.

Changes since the Definitive Map was last published
The published 1998 Definitive Map shows legal changes up to 1 October 1997.

Applying to Change a right of way

If you own or manage land and wish to change a public path, you can download our Diversion Pack. If you feel that a path should be extinguished, you can download an Extinguishment Pack. Both are available on the Forms & Downloads page.

Applying to correct an error or omission in the Definitive Map
If you want to make a ‘claim’ on a path (add a new path, delete an existing path, or upgrade/downgrade a path e.g. change a footpath to a bridleway), then please contact our Definitive Map team.
