A new Directorate, a new way of working and a new home. I have had my first ‘hard-hat’ visit to Saltisford. By July 300-380 staff from Northgate Street and other premises will be moving into the 35,000 sq. ft. of office space at Saltisford. This is exciting news and an opportunity to explore new ways of working. It signals very positively the start of the new Directorate. (Look out for the book, Northgate Street, to celebrate the residents and education staff that have filled these buildings for over 300 years.)
This Strategic Review, which will be crucial to the Head of Service – Young People, has been conducted as one of the workstreams in the Children Act Project. Like other workstreams on Integrated Disability Services, Enhanced Support Services and Extended Schools, it is developing our experiences and understanding of new and different ways of working. The consultation has involved young people via the web, with the temptation of an iPod, material has gone into schools, there have been questionnaires for parents and consultation events are happening in each area. The work has been a combined effort by the Children Act Project, the Education Department including the Youth and Community Service, Positive About Young People, the Youth Offending Service, the Teenage Pregnancy Service, the Children’s Fund, Connexions and the WCVYS (Warwickshire Council for Voluntary Youth Services). Most of all it is about listening to young people about the services they want and where they
want them.
From April 2006, the work of the Children Act Project will integrate with the mainstream work of the Council and its partners. We have reviewed all workstreams to determine how best to achieve this. The process of implementing the Act is, of necessity, long term and the approach to it may have to change again over the coming months and years. However, from April 2006 onwards all the workstreams now facilitated by the Children Act Project Team will be mainstreamed into the work of the new Children, Young People and Families Directorate and partner agencies on a phased basis. The speed of mainstreaming will depend on each workstream’s stage of development and the level of project support it will require to ensure its successful completion.
