Cotton Nappies
Cotton on... to Cotton Nappies

Cotton on to Cotton Nappies is a County Council project aimed at providing parents with information about washable nappies.

Using washable nappies will save you money, is kind to your baby's skin and will greatly reduce the amount of rubbish you throw away.

There are four types of cotton nappy available, so it is worth doing some research to find out which type will suit you and your baby.

All-in-One
These are designed to be very similar to a disposable nappy, with integral waterproof outers and Velcro fastenings. They are easy to fit but can take a long time to dry. You will need to buy larger sizes as your baby grows.

Pocket nappies
Have a waterproof outer and stay dry liner, often made of a fleece material. There is a gap at the back of the waist where an absorbent microfibre inner is inserted. Additional boosters can be added for more absorbancy. When washing, the inner is removed from the pocket and dried separately. Pocket nappies dry very quickly. Nappies are available in one size which fits from birth to potty, or sized, in small, medium or large.

Shaped nappies
These are cotton nappies which fit comfortably round your baby's bottom, and need waterproof wrap or pants on top. There are a number of different types of fastenings for these nappies, some come in one size which grows with your baby and other come in a variety of sizes to be changed according to your needs.

Flat nappies
These are a two piece nappy, using a flat cotton square which is folded to fit inside a waterproof wrap. They are the most economical option and dry quickly but can be a bit fiddly on a wriggly baby.
