The club OO layout Duxbury under constructionThe Leamington & Warwick Model Railway Society was formed over 30 years ago in Milverton. The society now has over 60 members, mainly from South Warwickshire although some travel from Rugby and Nuneaton. Members come from all groups and occupations.
They meet in spacious club rooms just outside Leamington Spa which are home to five club layouts in various stages of construction in EM, P4, OO, O and N gauges. These are team efforts involving groups of modellers each making their own contribution to the project. This allows individuals to work on the areas that interest them which building something they might otherwise not have the chance to create. An active junior section are currently building their own layout with adult supervision.
Barry works on his own layout ‘Jupiter Moon’Many members also have their own layouts and simply visit the club to meet friends and consult the extensive library. Many of the layouts built by members can be seen at exhibitions around the UK and even Europe. They also regularly appear in books and magazines.
Demonstrations by suppliers of equipment or products to the hobby take place occasionally, as do slide shows and talks on real railways. Some of these events happen on club evenings, others on days when the clubrooms are opened specially.
members at work in the extensive clubroomMembership has soared since the clubs move five years ago to its new premises, so much so that they are now actively looking for somewhere even larger to meet. The current 2500 square feet of space seemed enormous after years in town basement but they can now fill this an more. If you know of anywhere larger available for a reasonable rent, please get in touch.
Finishing touches are applied to ClarendonThe club holds its own exhibition every year at Myton School, Myton Road, Warwick. January’s show featured 10 working layouts, including two from the club as well as traders selling all the “bits and pieces” needed by anyone wanting to try the hobby for themselves. With over 1200 people visiting the show, there was plenty of appetite for this !
A quarterly newsletter with articles about the layouts, events, railway history and modelling is produced for members, especially the more far-flung who can’t visit as often as they would like.
Detail of Clarendon StationWhy not come along and visit the club rooms ? Come along any Thursday evening, opening times are from 8 pm until 10:30 pm. There is no obligation to join for a few weeks. After that, if you feel you'd like to join in with any of the layout sections, and think you can cope with club life and all the fun and hassle of exhibitions, then talk to one of the committee. You are sure of a friendly reception as well as a cup of tea made by the President !
