Street Lighting

Our purpose is the provision and maintenance of road lighting, footpath lighting and illuminated traffic signs. We aim to care for all road users by keeping the street lights and illuminated traffic signs in a good and safe condition and to provide a service which gives excellent value for money. The annual street lighting budget for both energy and maintenance is in the order of £3,250,000.

We aim to...

  • Attend and repair faults, except those which only the Regional Electricity Company can repair (e-on).
  • Ensure that at least 98.5% of the Street Lights and Illuminated traffic signs, for which we are responsible, operate correctly and if go faulty are repaired within 5 working days where possible.
  • Maintain and operate road lighting to create a safe night - time environment thus meeting the need for safety in the community, in particular reducing fear and the potential for crime. To maintain and operate illuminated traffic signs as an aid to traffic safety.
What we do...
  • Carry out night time inspections of the 47,500 street lights and 7,500 illuminated signs for which we are responsible every 28 nights. The purpose of the inspections is to identify lights which are out at night time.
  • Clean lanterns and change lamps regularly.
  • Make safe any dangerous accidental or vandal damage within two hours of receiving a report.
