Literary Festivals in Warwickshire 2010

Warwickshire is the birthplace of possibly the greatest literary figure ever known, William Shakespeare. Though there are also plenty of other literary greats associated with the county that are celebrated throughout the year at several events by various organisations.

In 2010 there are a number of literary events and festivals throughout the county that see live performances from well known writers, authors, poets and more. All offer a great opportunity to meet today's established literary figures and also see rising up and coming new talent.

Shakespeare Birthplace in Stratford upon Avon has events celebrating Shakespeare's birthday every year


The RSC in Stratford upon Avon has special events on Shakespeare's birthday as well as plays and other performances throughout the year

Shakespeare Birthday Celebrations, Fri 23rd to Sun 25th April 2010. The 23rd April (St George's Day) is the anniversary of Shakespeare's birth, and is a time of great celebration in Stratford-Upon-Avon. Among the many events held, there is a procession through the town of bands, civic dignitaries, actors, morris dancers, and the staff and pupils of local schools.

Several organisations and attractions also hold their own events on their own premises, these include the Royal Shakespeare Company, Shakespeare's Birthplace, the Stratford Civic Hall, the Falstaff Experience and many other attractions around the town centre.

Stratford Upon Avon Literary Festival, Mon 26th April - Mon 3rd May 2010. Stratford-upon-Avon Civic Hall is the home of the festival, though various venues across the town will also be hosting events. See www.stratfordliteraryfestival.co.uk for full details.


Stratford upon Avon Poetry Festival, April to May 2010

Stratford upon Avon Poetry Festival, April to May 2010. Sponsored by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust. The festival comprises a mixture of established contemporary poets reading their own work, and well-known actors, mainly from the Royal Shakespeare Company, reading verse on different themes or concentrating on past poets. Kenilworth Festival, 8th to 16th May 2010

Kenilworth Festival, Sat 8th to Sun 16th May 2010. The annual Kenilworth Festival features a spectacular array of events for all ages over a fun packed week in May. Polesworth Abbey Arts Festival, July 2010. Polesworth Abbey Arts has two parts. The main Festival Weekend is in July, but other events are also organised throughout the year too.

Polesworth Abbey Arts is a celebration through liturgy, music and the arts. It will enable people to take part in and experience high quality music and other arts activities throughout the year, During July there will be a Festival Weekend to celebrate Polesworth's own Saint Editha, which will take place within the setting of Polesworth Abbey and its surroundings at the historic centre of Polesworth.

Warwick Words - Festival of Literature and Spoken Word, Fri 1st to Sun 10th October 2010

Warwick Words - Festival of Literature and Spoken Word, Fri 1st to Sun 10th October 2010. Warwick's very own Festival of Literature and Spoken Words will welcome performances and talks from some of the country's leading writers, illustrators, storytellers with workshops on diverse literary genres by leading exponents. There are many ways to enjoy Warwick Words, with lunches, workshops, afternoon teas, free events, debates, childen's events, live performances, poetry pub crawls, walks and talks, all across numerous venues within the historic town of Warwick. Mill on the Floss Festival, Oct 2010

Mill on the Floss Festival, Oct 2010. The George Eliot Fellowship is putting on a 'Mill on the Floss' Festival in October 2010, and lots of other Mill-related events during the year. Details to be confirmed. See www.george-eliot-fellowship.com for further details.


Fantastic Fun With Words, Sat 16th to Sun 30th Oct 2010. Fantastic Fun With Words is run by Warwickshire Libraries with support from Arts Council England. It is for children and adults across the North, Nuneaton and Bedworth and Rugby districts of Warwickshire. Schools will be invited to bring groups to their local public library for a session with a local author in the first week, then in the second week (half term) there will be public sessions for young people and adults either listening to authors or getting creative with words and illustration.

William Shakespeare

Shakespeare was born in the centre of Stratford upon Avon, today Shakespeare's Birthplace is a popular attraction visited by thousands of people every year


William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564, and is now regarded as a literary genius whose creative achievement has never been surpassed in any age

Probably the most famous Warwickshire person of all, William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564, and is now regarded as a literary genius whose creative achievement has never been surpassed in any age.

Stratford upon Avon is home to the world renowned Royal Shakespeare Company and runs regular performances of his work, as well as other famous playwrights and poets. Currently going through a multi-million pound investment, the company's new home in Stratford-upon-Avon is due for completion during 2010.

Stratford-Upon-Avon has many places linked to Shakespeare. All can be visited by the public and provide a great day out for the family.

Locations include the buildings ran by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust (Shakespeare's Birthplace, Mary Arden's, Anne Hathaway's Cottage, Hall's Croft, Harvard House, Nash House and New Place), the Falstaff's Experience, and the Collegiate Church of the Holy and Undivided Trinity where Shakespeare himself is buried.

Mary Anne Evans (George Eliot)

George Eliot (Mary Anne Evans) was a leading writer of the Victorian era

Mary Anne Evans, better known by her pen name George Eliot, was an English novelist and one of the leading writers of the Victorian era. Her novels, largely set in provincial England, are well known for their realism and insight.

George Eliot is still highly regarded today and Nuneaton’s most famous daughter has had many of her works adapted for television. Lavish productions of her novels Middlemarch, Daniel Deronda and The Mill on the Floss have ensured that her fame lives on.

Several of her books, including 'Adam Bede' and 'Middlemarch', are distilled from her early life in Warwickshire and include references to many locations in the north of the county.
