Hazardous Sites
Certain industries are identified as high risk / hazardous sites, due to chemicals, explosives, or other dangerous substances, which they may use in their processes or store.

The Health & Safety Executive regulates hazardous sites under the COMAH Regulations (Control of Major Accident Hazards, 1999), and establishes a duty on such sites to prepare for emergencies.

The local authority also has a duty under COMAH 1999, to prepare adequate off-site emergency plans to deal with the consequences of a major accident on site. This duty is performed by the Emergency Planning Unit working closely with industry representatives from these and other sites, together with the Health & Safety Executive to develop such plans, to ensure the safety of the neighbouring public and environment to such sites.

In the event of an incident at one of these sites or suspected danger from fumes or chemicals always remember:

Go indoors unless there is an obvious risk to the property, close doors and windows and shut down ventilation systems if it is safe to do so.

Stay indoors until you know more about the situation and the appropriate action you need to take to protect yourself further.
