Fragment of a letter written by George Eliot to Alice Helps, offering condolences, 'a silent pressure of the hand...', on the death of the latter's father. Written from The Priory, Regent's Park. Dated Monday only. The signature has been torn from the letter.
On the reverse of this letter in another 19th century hand is written, 'The double autograph of G H Lewes and G Eliot asked for by the Queen [Victoria] on seeing this letter'
