The Local Authority and Race Equality

Race Equality is important because it :

enhances local democracy and accountability to involve ethnic minorities in the local democratic process. It ensures that local government is delivering a fair service to all tax payers and local residents,

raises customer satisfaction. Through wide consultation with ethnic minority communities, the Local Authority can, by delivering culturally appropriate services resulting in user satisfaction,

helps nurture a multicultural anti-racist curriculum which values and respects the achievements of all people from diverse cultures,

prepares students to be active citizens in a multifaith world,

helps Local Authorities to understand the range of customer needs. A workforce which reflects the differences of its customers can help shape responsive and tailored services,

attracts a talented workforce. Talent resides in people of all ethnic backgrounds and a diverse workforce can harness this,

helps the Local Authority to become an Employer of Choice. Staff are a critical, competitive resource and a Local Authority with a strong record in race equality can attract the best people from diverse communities,

enhances partnerships. A Local Authority with a strong community connection is an attractive partner for the private and voluntary sectors,

enhances the relationship with the central government,

avoids the costs of discrimination. Discrimination is expensive. It costs money and undermines staff morale, productivity and reputation. Student educational attainments are reduced by discrimination.
