Oldham Council's Education and Cultural Services Department has published the following titles which can help ethnic minority pupils, and their teachers, in the classroom:

Extended Visits Workbook: Bangladesh and Pakistan KS2

This book includes a wide range of activities focussing on the Sylhet area of Bangladesh and the Mirpur area of Pakistan, from where many immigrant families in Oldham originate. The full colour book engages children whilst developing and consolidating KS2 curriculum skills.

Cost: £5 (includes 2 dual text leaflets).

Mother Tongue Assessment Pack (for pupils aged 5-15)

A high quality photocopiable resource. Mother Tongue ability can be levelled using the language descriptors included based on National Curriculum English and adapted for Mother Tongue use. Meaningful comparisons between Mother Tongue and English development are therefore available to non-specialist staff for the first time.

A Day in the Life of Series

The first set of 5 books in this series focuses on the daily lives of five Oldhamers of Kashmiri origin. A second set will focus on life in the Mirpur region of Kashmir. Each book contains 10 colourful photographs accompanied by simple texts. Each book has two versions, English/Bangla and English/Urdu. The books are suitable for use in school and in family learning projects in both monocultural and multicultural settings.

Guidelines for the Assessment of Bilingual Pupils may have Learning Difficulties (KS1-1)

This best selling guide gives professional and schools timelines for assessment and discussion of the triggers which lead to SEN referral. By working through and considering the possible reasons for difficulties presented, a much clearer and well founded judgement can be made. The publication is updated to include the implications of the new Code of Practice of EAL pupils.

Ethnic Minority Achievement Survey (KS1-4)

Contains straightforward assessment advice and easy, understandable level descriptors based closely on National Curriculum English. Accessible to both specialist EAL and non-specialist staff alike with a minimum of training.

An individual pupil booklet for detailed record keeping and an A3 chart to facilitate 'at a glance' assessment are also available.

Physical Education for All: Guidelines for PE in Multi-faith Schools

Offers practical advice to schools, sports providers and parents in order to ensure that all children and young people, irrespective of race and gender, are able to take part in and enjoy a full range of PE activities. Guidance on appropriate clothing for PE seeks to take account of health, safety, hygiene and 'modesty' requirements for boys and girls. The Guidance provides clear recommendations regarding cultural concerns, and offers a variety of choices for families, children and young people.

Raising Attainment through Reducing Extended Absence during Term Time

Policy statement from Oldham LA which has recently been revised and updated in the light of an extensive review of policy and a survey of current practice nationally. The policy statement provides a framework and guidance for managing the impact of extended visits. The key focus includes; a home school contact; sample letter to parents; detailed flowchart of required intervention of pupils not returning, recommendations for maximising educational benefits of extended visits. Available in English/Urdu and English/Bangla.
