Sustainability!
Not easy to say, much easier to carry out.
But only if we’re all in it together!

What’s it all about?

Simply put, sustainability means changing the way we live now to make sure that our grandchildren, and their grandchildren, inherit the kind of world we’d want to live in.

There are 6.5 billion people on Earth, with an expected increase to 9 billion by 2050, and collectively we’re making quite a mess of the planet. We need to start changing how we live to halt climate change, pollution and over-consumption.

Sustainability isn’t just for the dedicated few – we all need to change our ways. If not, our children’s children’s children will have to deal with the consequences.
Good luck!
The Glass family take delivery of some organic vegetablesOne intrepid Bedworth family took up the challenge of living sustainably for 3 weeks in the run up to Warwickshire County Council’s Sustainability Day For Schools (SD4S) on Tuesday 24th May 2005.

The Glass family put their shopping, eating, recycling, energy use and travelling habits under the microscope for BBC Midlands Today. Their challenge – recorded in a video diary – was to live more sustainably for three weeks and to help them, the family were provided with a range of sustainable products to trial.

The youngest of the four children in the family, ten-year-old Jodie, attends Newdigate Primary School and thoroughly enjoyed SD4S with the rest of her class. Jodie recorded her family’s experience for us in a series of short web reports in the run up to SD4S - see links opposite.

The Glass family had more success with certain parts of the challenge than others - Dad (Gordon) was amazed at how easy it was to recycle and compost, and says the family are now "converted!". Likewise, they enjoyed eating healthily and have vowed to continue. Mum (Lesley) was surprised how good the eco-balls were for doing an ordinary wash but preferred her usual brand of washing powder for clothes that had got muddy. The family have been trying hard to reduce their energy consumption and, while admitting they could improve further, they feel they have made a great start and are looking forward to seeing a reduction in energy bills.

Having successfully completed their 3 week challenge, Jodie and Lesley were presented with a special certificate at SD4S to mark the family's achievement.

We would like to thank not only the Glass family for being brave enough to take on the challenge, but also all our sponsors who kindly donated the environmental products trialled.
