A speech therapist works with children with special needsStockton Primary School has been recognised for the way it supports pupils with dyslexia.

The school near Southam has been awarded the Dyslexia Friendly Schools Quality Mark by the British Dyslexia Association.
Two teachers and two teaching assistants at the school received training from Warwickshire County Council’s Learning and Behaviour Support Service.
Following this, they made improvements to make the school a more dyslexia-friendly environment. This included making sure that equipment to help pupils with dyslexia to learn reading, spelling and numeracy is to hand.
Senior Teacher Hazel Spencer said: “We looked at every aspect of school life, thinking about what support a pupil with dyslexia needs.
“In terms of individual pupils’ learning we assess their needs and make sure that the support they need is available as a matter of course.
“It is about making sure that pupils with learning needs understand what is going on and can participate in, and enjoy, school life.”

“Having been through this scheme, we now find that our pupils are being challenged to achieve more. They take more responsibility for their own learning and we help them to use their preferred learning style. We work with the children and their parents to encourage them and to celebrate their achievements. We identify the best practice to support a particular need and this has had the effect of the children being more enthusiastic, working harder and achieving more.”
