If you
look after a relative, friend or neighbour, providing a lot of care regularly, we can help you. We can assess your needs as a carer and look at ways to help you continue caring. We can help carers by providing a number of different services that help you take a short break from your caring role and give you the chance to "recharge your batteries".

The types of services that are available are:
  • Residential short breaks for the person you care for;
  • Short breaks that enable the person you look after to go out and participate in activities they want to do;
  • Sitting services that allow the person you look after to stay in their own home while you take a break;
  • Daycare in a daycare service or residential setting for the person you look after; and
  • One-off payments that can be used flexibly to support you in your caring role.
  • In Your Place Service offers carers a break for up to 72 hours, day and night, in your own home.
  • Carers Emergency Plan offers the opportunity to plan with a specialist carers worker what would happen to the person you care for in the event of an accident or crisis.

If you prefer we could offer you a Direct Payment so that you can make your own arrangements for short breaks or you could have a combination of the above Direct Services and your own arrangements.

As a Carer you may be eligible for a Direct Payment to help you retrain for employment, pay for driving lessons or pursue a leisure interest.

For more information about how to have your needs as a carer assessed and how to access these services, please contact your local Adult Social Care team office.

We can also give you details of local support services for carers, that can offer you support and advice as well as information about carers' support groups in your area.
