Schools have an important role to play in Sustainability as they educate and help young people understand about impacts on the planet. They can also demonstrate sustainable living to students and the community.
The Government wants every school to be sustainable by 2020 so they have developed a Sustainable Schools Framework which will be implemented through '8 Doorways'. They have also developed a Sustainable Schools Website. Sometimes 'Sustainable Schools' is known as ‘Education for Sustainable Development’.
Warwickshire County Council has also developed a Sustainable Schools Framework 'Educating for a Sustainable Future' to help schools become sustainable. This incorporates initiatives already taking place in schools such as school travel plans, recycling, healthy schools and Eco-Schools. It also involves training headteachers, governors and teachers in sustainability, as well as making sure schools have appropriate resources. It is important to note that being an Eco-School is an integral part of becoming a sustainable school as it reduces resource use, involves students, and lays firm environmental foundations. |
