CVS, Warwick District is, not only an infrastructure organisation for the voluntary and community sector but, also a source of information about best practice.

It has been successful in achieving Investors in People accreditation and really impressed the judges for the way it has restructured its operation in recent years, introducing work-life balance as a business policy.

Winner Medium Employer Award 2004

Bacharach Europe, (incorporating Geotechnical Instruments, GeoRemediation, and Bacharach Instruments), is the UK's premier supplier and manufacturing company of gas detection equipment (landfill, combustion, HVAC etc.), water quality & level monitoring and geotechnical equipment.

This manufacturing company has made considerable efforts in the last 12 months to improve its work-life balance policies.

This hotel runs a 24/7 operation, employing approximately 160 people on full time, part time, term time, casual and salaried contracts, in a business sector where recruitment can be difficult.

The hours worked reflect the needs of the business and can only be achieved by offering flexible working, and a range of benefits and training opportunities, to motivate staff to offer a good service to customers.

The judges felt that, in the last 12 months, the manager had brought a new commitment to the organisation and changes made had resulted in a significant improvement in the attitude and enthusiasm of staff.

Winner Corporate Employer Award 2004 and winner in 2003

This distribution plant, which supplies GAP stores in the UK, likes to give its employees ‘reasons to stay rather than reasons to leave’. GAP employs people from all cultures and believes diversity is all about who people are and how individual differences impact on the way people relate to and work with each other.

The judges found it difficult to find fault with this organisation and were extremely impressed with the range of benefits and training introduced

GAP knows that business success is dependent on making the company a great place to work and the infectious enthusiasm of the managers is reflected in the highly motivated and committed workforce.

Special Achievement Award Small Employer Category for outstanding success in the development of work-life balance policies

The Jennifer Trust is the UK support group for families and adults living with a diagnosis of Spinal Muscular Atrophy, a genetically inherited muscle wasting condition.

In spite of having a small workforce, currently nine employees, this is a professionally structured organisation which has demonstrated outstanding success in the development of work-life balance policies.

The Trust has a positive approach to supporting its staff, who through the nature of the job work in a stressful environment, and offers a range of flexible working options, training and benefits. In the last 12 months the Trust has invested in a confidential telephone helpline to give employees work-life support. The judges were really impressed with this small employer.

Special Achievement Award Medium Employer Category, for consistency and innovation in the development of work-life balance policies

This childcare provider has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to work-life balance policies. The director believes a motivated and diverse workforce is Bright Kid’s biggest asset and her enthusiasm for the business and understanding of the benefits of flexible working has meant that policies have been consistently developed and improved in consultation with staff.

This organisation was recognised for achievement in work-life balance in these Awards in 2002 and 2003 when it was in the small employer category and the fact that it has moved up to the medium employer category is a measure of its success.

Special Achievement Award Corporate Employer Category for outstanding improvement in work-life balance policies

Domestic & General Group Plc is the UK’s largest specialist provider of breakdown appliance repair protection plans. The Bedworth office currently employs 325 staff. This organisation offers a huge range of varying shift patterns as well as a comprehensive staff development programme.

In the last 12 months it has embarked on a pilot home working scheme to offer additional work options to its staff.

The judges felt there was a marked improvement in morale this year and were impressed by the fact that, the management takes pride in the culture of the business and responds to the needs of staff and, this is reflected in the motivated and stable workforce.
