My child has a Statement of Special Educational Needs and is under 16 years of age. What transport assistance does Warwickshire County Council offer?

Warwickshire County Council assists those with Special Educational Needs aged 4 -16 years old to travel to school, provided they satisfy the eligibility criteria:

  • You are resident in Warwickshire and

  • The distance from home to the school or unit is more than two miles for those aged under 8, or more than three miles for those aged over 8 (measured by the shortest walking route) or

  • The distance from your home to the school is such that, having consideration of your child's special needs, he/she would be unable to get to the school (accompanied by a responsible adult) unless transport was provided and

  • Your child is attending the nearest appropriate school to your home that meets your child's needs as specified in his/her Statement of Special Educational Needs (N.B: if you choose a school other than the nearest appropriate you will not be entitled to free transport) or

  • The Local Authority has made a placement for a period of continuous assessment and consider it necessary to provide transport or

  • Your child does not have a statement but attends specialist provision (e.g. a Pupil Referral Unit) provided that the distance from home is greater than the statutory walking distance (see above).

Is assistance available for those over 16 years of age to travel to Sixth Form or College?

The Local Authority provides assistance for 16 - 25 year olds with Special Needs to attend Sixth Form or College courses. Assistance will be provided if you meet these criteria:
  • You are resident in Warwickshire and

  • The distance between your home and the school/college is more than three miles by the shortest walking route or is such that, having consideration of their special needs, your son/daughter would be unable to get to the establishment unless transport was provided.

  • Your son/daughter is aged over 16 and under 25 years on 31st August 2008.

  • You agree to pay a flat rate charge of £100 per term or £300 for the academic year (N.B. termly payments are only accepted for bus passes and the annual payment of £300 must be made for taxi transport) or do not need to pay because you or the student receive Income Support or Income-Based Job Seekers Allowance or the Guaranteed Element of the Pension Credit.

Transport costs are heavily subsidised and are offered at the same rate for students aged 16-19 in Further Education.
