How to Request Authorisation for Portable Temporary Signals

Shuttle working portable traffic signals

Application forms requesting the authorisation of shuttle working portable traffic signals should in the first instance be directed to the Street Works team for authorisation.

If the proposed location for the shuttle working portable traffic signals are within 100m of permanent traffic signals or pedestrian crossings then the contractor also needs to give 72 hour notice to the Traffic Signals team for switching the permanent traffic signals or pedestrian crossings off.

Please complete the Shuttle working application form (PDF - 98 KB) and send it to the Street Works team and inform the Traffic Signals team if required.

Multi-phase portable traffic signals

The Street Works team will authorise the use of multi-phase Portable Traffic Signals within the County. However, at location where an application involves the authorisation of multi-phase portable traffic signals located within 100m of permanent traffic signals or pedestrian crossings, then the application will be dealt with by the Traffic Signals team.

If all relevant information has been submitted and no site visits are required by the Authority, no authorisation charge will be incurred by the contractor. However, should the information submitted be insufficient, a standard charge of £475 will be made for the work associated with the authorisation of multi-phase portable traffic signals. The fee covers the following work carried out by this Department:
Roadworks sign
  • Initial site visit to ensure signals are feasible and assess siting of the signal heads.
  • Consultation with Agent Authorities.
  • Check plan(s) to ensure that working area is kept to a minimum.
  • Check all red timings and sequence of lights.
  • Check traffic management proposals.
  • Establish traffic flow at the site.
  • Make recommendations on timings / traffic management.
  • Site visit(s) during the works if required.

  • The Authority has a fixed standard charge instead of a variable charge. This ensures Contractors are aware of the actual cost when requesting the authorisation of temporary signals. It is accepted that on some occasions the Authority will make a loss and on others a profit.

The fee can be reduced to £300 provided that 21 days notice is given.

Please complete the Multi-phase application form (PDF - 333 KB) and send it to the relevant team.

Authorisation will only be considered upon receipt of all the information detailed in the application form.
