My dear Cousin
How long since we have corresponded. I see by the newspapers that your sister, Mrs. Cross, is dead, pray accept my condolences on the occasion. What a very distinguished I may say public character she had become and how very complimentary the articles in the Standard, Times and other papers are in giving an abstract of her literary and learned achievements, she was carried off very suddenly, and before reaching a great age. My wife has during the present month lost a favourite sister, Mrs. Arthur Onslow, she was in good health, seemingly, up to the 3rd inst. and was staying with her sister Mrs. Langley at Southsea enjoying her walks there, and in great spirits her third and last unmarried daughter having recently been well married, and a son of the Royal Engineers having just returned from the wars in Afghanistan and been married to a young lady of good fortune besides which a favourite daughter Mrs. Graham with her husband was on her way home, and the eldest son, in the Royal Navy was also expected home very soon from the Pacific in the midst of all their joy poor Isabella was struck down with a bad fever and in less than a fortnight was no more She was quite my favourite sister in law, she was in her 55th year. On the 15th my son Alfred, who you saw when he was at Cheltenham College and who is now a Captain in the 9th Lancers, embarked for India to rejoin his Regiment, so you see it is not a Merry Xmas with us. Fortunately our son Theodore, who is a Captain in the 50th Foot and who took out his young wife to India last January is at Umballa, on staff supply, the station where the 9th Lancers are to be quartered so the two brothers will be together we have every reason to be pleased with our daughter in law she is evidently a capital manager & is very clever all we can hope for is good health for them all.
I hope Mrs. Evans is pretty well and that all the other members of your family are well and flourishing, pray remember me most kindly to them all wishing all a Merry Xmas & happy New year
I remain yours very sincerely
H.W. Evans
I will post this on return home as I must now go to meet the train & return.
