Welcome to Warwickshire County Council

Regeneration
Warwick

The historic town of Warwick was founded on the banks of the River Avon in 914 AD. The medieval core of the town was prevented from expansion by the open spaces that surround it: the Common and Racecourse; the grounds of the Priory; St Nicholas Meadow; the River Avon; and later, Warwick Castle.

Warwick has many important historic buildings, including the world famous Castle, St Mary's Church, which dominates the surrounding countryside and Lord Leycester Hospital.

Today’s Warwick is home to 27,000 residents and boasts a plethora of unique independent shops, bars and restaurants. In regeneration terms, the County Council is looking at
St Marys Church - Warwick
redeveloping parts of the Shire Hall complex which includes a new One Stop Shop and potentially a new relocated library to front the Market Place.

The Old Shire Hall and Courts will be vacated in 2010 as the courts move into a new Southern Criminal Justice Centre in Leamington and an alternative suitable use will be sought. The County Council is working with Warwick District Council on a number of other town centre and potential redevelopment initiatives in the town.

The County Council also works closely with the Warwick Traffic Forum. Established in 2004 and consisting of a large group of town stakeholders, the Forum’s main objective is to formulate a traffic management plan for the town which will help combat congestion and improve the town’s environment for all.
